Uruguay has been a Party to the WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (WHO FCTC) since February 27, 2005. Much progress has been made in Uruguay with respect to tobacco control and preventing tobacco industry interference. However, some areas that can be strengthened further include adopting a government-wide code of conduct for dealing with the tobacco industry; a strong policy to disallow the acceptance of all forms of contributions/gifts from the industry; and requiring the tobacco industry to submit information on its marketing expenditures and other activities such as lobbying, political contributions and related initiatives.
